These two communities come up together constantly, because they are the two names most often shortlisted by buyers who want water, golf, and an established neighborhood on Lake Norman.

Location and corridor position.
The largest practical difference is where each sits on the I-77 corridor. The Peninsula, in Cornelius, is south — closer to Charlotte, closer to the airport, and closer to the denser retail and dining of the south lake towns.
The Point, in Mooresville, is north. That distance is the source of most of its character: it is quieter, less trafficked, and more separated from the corridor, with Mooresville rather than Charlotte as the practical center of daily life.
Waterfront and dock character.
Both communities have waterfront homes with private docks permitted through Duke Energy's shoreline program, and in both cases dock rights are property-specific rather than community-wide.
The Point's peninsula geometry produces a long, varied shoreline with a wide mix of deepwater, cove, and protected positions. Buyers who value main-channel water tend to weigh The Point's shoreline variety heavily; the deciding factor in either community is always the individual lot, not the community name.
Housing and lot character.
The Peninsula includes a broad range of housing types and densities alongside its estate homes, which widens the entry point but also produces more variation street to street.
The Point is more uniformly oriented toward larger custom and semi-custom single-family estate homes, with waterfront, golf frontage, and interior positions forming the main distinctions. Verify lot size, home size, and condition for any specific property rather than generalizing from either pattern.
Golf and club structure.
Each community is organized around its own club, and in both cases the club is a separate entity from the property owners association. Home ownership does not automatically confer membership in either place.
The Point's course is Trump National Golf Club Charlotte, the only Trump National club in the Carolinas. The Peninsula has its own club and its own membership structure. If golf is central to the decision, contact each club directly — this site speaks for neither.

Households with frequent uptown Charlotte obligations, regular air travel, or a preference for denser amenity access generally find the south-lake position of The Peninsula easier.
